Alice Springs is the third largest town in the Northern Territory with a population of 28,605 or 12.2% of the Northern Territory's total population! Before European settlement, Alice Springs was inhabited by the Arrernte Aboriginal people. Known to the Arrernte people as Mparntwe (pronounced mbarn-twa), the town of Alice Springs was brought to life by the actions of several ancestral figures. Arrernte people continue to live in Alice Springs, observing cultural traditions and laws, as well as teaching younger generations the traditional Arrernte language, history and the importance of their culture.
