Located only 72 kilometres (45 mi) south of Perth, the beautiful city of Mandurah is the second largest city in Western Australia.
The name of Mandurah comes from an adaptation of the word ‘Mandjoogoordap’, which means 'meeting place of the heart' in the tongue of the area’s first people, the Binjareb tribe of the Bibbulmun Nation. The Binjareb lived well in the area, thanks to the abundance of fish, game, berries, and fruits within the region; however, it was the 'Swan River Mania' that brought the first European settler to Mandurah. Thomas Peel – along with a number of workmen, equipment, and stores – settled in the area in 1829, but it wasn’t until 1843, when a road and ferry were constructed, that Mandurah opened up for other inhabitants.
These days, the town has flourished into a city and its tourism, retail, manufacturing, construction, mining and agricultural industries have kept it humming along. Mandurah is considered the unofficial gateway to the South West, so it attracts a large number of national and international tourists every year. Many of these tourists are passing through to the South West regions of Western Australia, but many end up staying in Mandurah for a while, and they then take advantage of the city’s many tourist attractions – particularly aquatic attractions and activities. The City foreshore is inhabited by a plethora of bird and sea life, including dolphins, whales, pelicans, shags, a variety of fish and the Blue Manna Crab (Portunus pelagicus), which has actually earned its own festival , Crabfest, held in early March every year. The city’s protected waterways and splendid beaches also offer an opportunity for a wide variety of swimming, boating and fishing activities. During the Christmas season, the canal area of Mandurah lights up with a display of sparkling lights and Christmas light boat cruises are very popular attraction during this time. Other attractions within Mandurah include the two zoos that lie on the city’s outskirts, the national Park, a tourist railway and even a miniature village.
The CBD has five major shopping precincts, as well as many café’s, restaurants, boutique stores, pubs, clubs, parks and other public spaces.
